Cypher official Valorant art

Will Cypher’s upcoming buffs help him compete with Chamber?

Finally some love for this man.

Riot Games is making changes to some of Valorant’s least and most featured Operators.

The Valorant patch 5.10 public beta environment notes list a full changelog of Cypher buffs and Fade nerfs – with potentially big ramifications for their place in the meta.

While Fade is currently one of the most popular Agents in the game, both in professional and casual play, Cypher has since languished at the bottom. As part of Valorant’s original roster of Agents, the Moroccan Sentinel suffered a power shift as new Agents were added to the game.

Trap wire

  • Max trap wire length increased from 1000 to 1500

Neural flight

  • Neural Theft now reveals enemies twice. There is a four-second delay between revelations
  • Time restriction for casting on enemy corpses has been removed
  • Maximum cast distance increased from 1200 to 1800

Quality of life

  • Updated yellow silhouette used for Cypher reveal on Spycam and Neural Theft
  • The yellow silhouette now disappears if the revealed enemy becomes visible to help reduce the confusion of seeing two representations of the enemy in different locations
  • The yellow silhouette now begins to fade and fades faster to make it more distinct from an actual enemy
  • Cypher’s placed utility is no longer destroyed by AOE damage from allies

Cypher’s Trapwire and Neural Theft Ultimate are improved. Trapwire’s longer length opens up more possibilities for trigger placement, so its setups should become less predictable.

“We hope to open up new Trapwire setups and mix in known game patterns,” Riot said.

Neural Theft now provides more valuable information about enemy positions with two pings instead of one. Previously, the ultimate was sorely lacking in information about enemy setups, as it only revealed opponents for a split second and didn’t account for any repositioning.

Cypher can now also cast Neural Theft on any enemy corpse, regardless of when they died. He can also do this from further away, potentially allowing him to stay safe while casting.

It remains to be seen if the changes will help Cypher compete with Chamber, an agent who has become the go-to sentry on many maps.

Former M3 Champions player Ayaz “nAts” Akhmetshin doesn’t seem to think so. “It feels like nothing has changed,” he said on Twitter. “Cypher will not pass Chamber. But Trapwire’s longer length is otherwise a nice buff.

ranger

  • Duration reduced from 3 to 2.5 seconds
  • Bite delay after hitting target increased from 0.4 to 0.6 seconds
  • Hitbox improvements
  • Close vision duration on hit reduced from 3.5 to 2.75 seconds
  • Stalkers now turn off and no longer debuff instead of debuffing their target if they teleport before it completes its animation

Nightfall

  • Cost increased from 7 to 8 ultimate points

“Fade’s Prowlers is a versatile, hard-to-match ability that we’re looking to refine with these changes,” Riot said.

“The duration changes encourage Fade to be more deliberate in the areas she chooses to sweep, while the other ability tweaks are meant to help enemies on the counterplay side.”

The changes are reminiscent of Sova nerfs in patch 4.08. Owl Drone’s duration has also been reduced, forcing Sova to use it more cautiously.

The changes also address a very specific interaction between the Chamber and the Prowler. Prior to this, Chamber would be myopic once bitten by the Prowler, and he would remain affected by the debuff even after teleporting away.

Now the animation must end for the debuff to apply.

Fade was one of Chamber’s most effective counters, and nerfs could possibly give the dapper sentry even more room to lash out.
