The crown finale sets sail for a whole new era – Plus, Grade Season 5

Change was in the air The crown finished its penultimate season… and more than one relationship has changed with it.

The Season 5 finale opens with Dodi al-Fayed telling his father Mohamed about a house he wants to buy in Malibu. (He has to act fast, “or I’m going to lose it to Michael Douglas.”) He also wants to introduce his dad to his new girlfriend…and it’s not Diana. Still. She’s busy phoning a phone show to vote ‘no’ to keeping the British monarchy and giggling to herself. Elsewhere, Tony Blair and Labor are set to sweep parliament, and the British colony of Hong Kong is to be returned to the Chinese, so times are changing. The Queen considers the transfer undignified, so she sends Charles to represent her in Hong Kong while she travels to Canada.

The Crown Season 5 Finale ElizabethDodi brings his actress girlfriend Kelly Fisher to London on a private jet to meet Mohamed, but he’s unimpressed: “Isn’t fucking her enough?” (They speak in Arabic, leaving Kelly and Mohamed’s wife out of the loop.) Mohamed also criticizes Dodi for having him finance a series of Hollywood flops, telling him: “The only thing you have talent for is this are women.” He still thinks Dodi could hit “the jackpot” there, though. (Hmmm.) Tony Blair and Labor win big on election night, and John Major gracefully steps aside, telling Elizabeth he’ll do whatever he can to save the Brittany, even though Labor is bound and determined to decommission it. (Metaphor alert!)

During her first meeting with Blair, Elizabeth evokes the Brittany, but Blair has a better idea: a brand new, privately funded yacht that the government could charter. He suggests the name new britain, which Charles of course likes. But Elizabeth would rather not have a yacht at all, so Charles’ trip to Hong Kong will be the Brittanylast trip. He is even obliged to go there in business class (gasp!) while Blair and his acolytes laugh in first class. Back in London, Mohamed spots Diana sitting alone at the ballet and invites her to join him and his wife for dinner. She confesses that she is “more sullen than ever” after the divorce and that she does not want to be there for Camilla’s birthday, which is fast approaching. So Mohamed invites him to bring his boys and come to Saint-Tropez with him and his family. He even has a brand new big yacht!

The Crown Season 5 Finale CharlesIn Hong Kong, Charles gives a speech commemorating the handover to the Chinese – and pulls Tony Blair aside for a private chat afterwards. Blair apologizes for the Britannia, but Charles waves it off: “There’s no point clinging to the past.” In fact, he thinks “the royal family needs a similar renovation”. He resents the constraints imposed on him by his family, particularly regarding remarriage. Elizabeth gets wind of this and confronts her son, reiterating that she does not approve of his marriage to Camilla. She has the rank of sovereign… “which will one day be me”, notes Charles. “One day, but not yet,” Elizabeth retorts. He calls his values old-fashioned and fears that “the world will move and those who come after you will have nothing left”.

As Elizabeth undertakes a sad last visit to the Brittany before it’s scrapped, Dodi proposes to Kelly, and Diana packs her bags for her trip to St. Tropez, with Mohamed enjoying life aboard his shiny new yacht.
