Robert Quinn trades notes for Eagles, Bears: Defensive end Star is dealt to Philly for fourth-round draft pick

The undefeated Philadelphia Eagles were the talk of the NFL at the start of the 2022 regular season, and that’s largely because of the several hard-hitting moves they made during the offseason. The Eagles apparently aren’t done adding to their roster, as they traded a fourth-round pick to the Chicago Bears in exchange for defensive end Robert Quinn, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones confirmed.

The passing thrower has recorded eight combined tackles and one sack in seven games played. While Quinn is 32, he has always been a hard-hitting player. Last season alone, he recorded 18.5 sacks in 16 games played and earned Pro Bowl nominations as well as All-Pro honors.

The former No. 14 overall pick was selected by the St. Louis Rams in North Carolina in 2011. Quinn recorded double-digit sacks in three of his first four NFL seasons, including including a career-high 19 sacks in 2013. It’s not the first time Quinn has been traded, as he was dealt to the Miami Dolphins in 2018 and the Dallas Cowboys in 2019. After those two stints a year old, Quinn signed with the Bears ahead of the 2020 season.

By NFL Media, the Bears will pick up most of Quinn’s remaining salary. He has two years left on his five-year, $70 million contract after 2022, according to Spotrac. Philly currently has Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat on defense, and the two have combined for 5.5 sacks in six games played. Quinn will fit perfectly into this talented defense.

Here’s how we rate this trade:

Eagles: A-

Go away, Howie Roseman. This move shows the Eagles are all set to win a Super Bowl. Remember how the Rams added Von Miller at the trade deadline last year? Not that Quinn is Miller, but this move is similar. It could be something that still triggers a talented defense to be even better as Philly hits the ground ready to run after their bye week. Quinn is no spring chicken, but he showed last year that he is still a hard-hitting player.

Philly gets an experienced pass-rusher, he can move with Graham and Sweat. A fourth round is a pretty decent price to pay for a 32-year-old, but what I love about this deal is that NFL Media reports the Bears will “collect most of the remaining salary” for Quinn. Unfortunately, we don’t have much clarity on what exactly that means, but Bears fans probably didn’t feel so good about the trade after this tidbit was flagged.

Bear: B-

With this move, it looks like the Bears will put more on the plates of Dominique Robinson and Trevis Gipson. The bears were would have gone shopping Quinn around this month as the trade deadline approached, and they found a willing partner in the Eagles. A fourth round for Quinn on the face of it looks solid, but then again, what does that mean the Bears will “take most of the remaining salary” for the player who won’t sack the quarterback for them again? At the same time, the Bears are currently in the top 10 in most cap space with $6.69 million, per Over The Cap, and lead the NFL in cap space next year by just a little. less than $116 million. Maybe money wasn’t a big deal, and maybe one of those young players can be a solid defensive starter.
