A police officer fatally shot and killed a knife-wielding assault suspect Sunday afternoon in West Baltimore, police said. Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said the officer was called around 3:39 p.m. to the intersection of Lafayette and Fulton Avenues where a man was armed with a knife, assaulting a woman on the ground. Harrison said an arriving officer saw the man climb on top of the woman. The officer then fired his weapon several times, striking the man. Police said officers removed the knife and treated the man, who was taken to hospital, where he died.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott praised the officers for their quick action.
