‘Partner Track’ and ‘The Imperfects’ canceled by Netflix after one season

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has chosen not to continue the second seasons of the legal drama Partner track, titled by Arden Cho and sci-fi drama The imperfectwith Italia Ricci.

Neither series was a breakout. Partner path debuted on August 26 with 16.7 million minutes watched in its opening weekend and peaked at No. 4 on Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 for English-Language Series. The imperfect opened at No. 3 in its first weekend (Sept. 8-11) before slipping. Both series only spent three weeks in the Top 10, which isn’t the long tail that Netflix wants to see for shows earning renewals.

The Netflix brass had high expectations for Partner track, which broke new ground in portrayal as a romantic drama with an Asian American lead role, Cho. Season 1 ended with a big cliffhanger, which indicates confidence in a show’s prospects, and the streamer had commissioned a writers room that was up and running, working on ideas for a potential second season, before Partner pathThe first in the series. Help too Partner pathNetflix’s cause was the fact that it was produced by Jax Media on a modest budget, as Netflix’s renewal decisions are based on cost versus viewership. Finally, it was not enough.

According to Helen Wan’s book, Partner path follows Ingrid Yun (Cho), an idealistic young M&A lawyer who struggles with her moral compass as she struggles to rise through the ranks of a white male-dominated New York law firm.

After Ingrid spent most of the season in a love triangle with Nick (Rob Heaps) and Jeff (Dominic Sherwood), she ultimately chose Jeff, who ended up committing the ultimate betrayal, as revealed by the shocking last seconds of the final. In a Q&A with Deadline, series creator Georgia Lee addressed the cliffhanger and other Season 1 details.

As Partner path comes to an untimely end, Lee and Cho remain in business with Netflix. Lee is a director, alongside Matt Owens and Joe Henderson, at Magic Quill Productions who gets a first look at the streamer. Meanwhile, Cho next appears in Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender. In addition, Zane Philips, who did it again on Partner path as Hunter, is a series regular in the upcoming Netflix drama series Glamour.

Created by Shelley Eriksen and Dennis Heaton, The imperfect revolves around Abbi (Rhianna Jagpal), a scientist, Juan (Iñaki Godoy), a comic book artist, and Tilda (Morgan Taylor Campbell), a singer, who are turned into monsters after undergoing experimental gene therapy. The trio later decide to track down the scientist responsible for their transformation and force him to turn them human again. Ricci stars as Dr. Sydney Burke, the scientist’s estranged former partner.

Godoy has been a Netflix mainstay with a major role in Quien Mato to Sara (Who killed Sara) before The Imperfects. He will next star in the streamer’s live-action series A playbased on the Japanese manga.
