Myles Garrett ‘looked happy’ in return but not training; Denzel Ward has a good chance to play: Quick shots

BEREA, Ohio — Myles Garrett returned to the Browns facility Thursday morning after being cited for failing to control his vehicle when he crashed on his way home from practice Monday afternoon.

But he sat out practice for the second straight day and his status for Sunday’s Falcons game is uncertain.

Defensive coordinator Joe Woods said Garrett is day to day for Sunday’s game and they’ll see how he feels over the next few days.

Garrett, who was driving 65 mph in a 45 zone according to the Ohio Highway Safety Patrol accident report, suffered a sprained shoulder, strained biceps and a severed hand.

Woods, like everyone in the organization, was grateful Garrett and his passenger didn’t sustain life-threatening injuries when he rolled his Porsche repeatedly through Sharon Township, N.D. Medina County.

“We always talk to our players about being safe outside the building,” Woods said. “Fortunately he had his seat belt on.”

Left guard Joel Bitonio also expressed his gratitude that Garrett was not seriously injured and noted that Kevin Stefanski always emphasizes safety. In fact, he urged the players to be smart and take care of each other during their mini-bye last weekend.

“He was here today so we got to see him a bit,” Bitionio said. “Stefanski just emphasized to us that we have to drive carefully, we have to be safe on the roads and things of that nature. You just want to protect yourself. It’s really just to protect yourself and the people around you in general. But we’re just glad he’s back in the building and hopefully he’ll be ready to roll here when he feels good.

He said Stefanski didn’t talk about it again, “but he talks to us at the start of the year about controlling what you can control and stuff like that.”

Cornerback Greg Newsome II spoke to Garrett, as did many of his teammates, who were shaken by the news of his crash Monday afternoon.

“He looked happy to be able to see us all again,” Newsome said. “I just said, ‘I love you, I’m glad you’re here.’ We will definitely be there for him no matter what he needs, and we can’t wait for him to come back.

Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah said Garrett was at the facility as usual Thursday.

“It’s a phenomenal experience to be able to see this situation but also to see him come back with few injuries,” Owusu-Koramoah said. “It’s always a blessing.”

Denzel Ward and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah return to training

The Browns picked up two of their five defensive starters injured in practice Thursday. They were cornerback Denzel Ward (back, ribs) and linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (groin). Woods said of Ward: “I really think there’s a good chance he can play.”

Ward played 100% defensive snaps in Thursday night’s win and scored a TD on the recovered fumble late in the game.

Jadeveon Clowney and Taven Bryan among six inactive players

Clowney (ankle) and Bryan (hamstring) were also among six players who did not participate in Thursday’s practice. The others were David Njoku (resting), offensive tackle Joe Haeg and right tackle Jack Conklin (knee).

David Njoku inactive with knee injury

Njoku, who caught a career-high nine passes for 89 yards and a touchdown against the Steelers, was originally reported as getting a veteran day off on Thursday, as was Amari Cooper (seven catches, 101 yards) on Wednesday. But when the injury report came out a bit later, Njoku was listed as inactive with a knee injury. Njoku was a full participant on Wednesday.

Falcons running back Cordarelle Patterson also sat out Thursday

Patterson, the Falcons’ bruised big back, sat out practice for the second straight day with a knee injury. If Patterson can’t play, it would be a huge break for the Browns. Patterson is third in the NFL with 302 yards (Nick Chubb is first with 341) and fifth with an average of 6.2 yards. He has two quick touchdowns.

“He’s a versatile guy,” Patterson said. He is able to put his foot down and fill those gaps. It is difficult to approach. He’s had some experience so far and he’s done well, so look what he looks like there now.
