Montell Jordan is “still processing” the shocking death of his longtime friend and collaborator Coolio.
The “This Is How We Do It” singer, 53, became emotional while speaking to Page Six about the sudden passing of the “Gangsta’s Paradise” rapper on Thursday night.
“He’s my friend…he’s my friend.” His children are my friends. His daughters, his sons, his ex-wife is a very, very good friend of ours“, he confides to us exclusively.
Jordan says he last saw Coolio Sept. 22 while on an “I Love the 90’s” tour stop in Frederick, Maryland.
“I was with him last Thursday,” the “Get It on Tonite” singer said. “We do shows together, so yeah, it’s heartbreaking.”
Jordan tells us that he and Coolio saw each other casually backstage walking in and out of their respective dressing rooms, and were just like, “Hey, what’s up? How are you?'”
The R&B entertainer says he didn’t expect this to be the last time he would speak to his friend.
“I’ve been with him for weeks and months now and I didn’t know – and still don’t know – the circumstances of his death, but I haven’t seen anything that would have indicated he was ill or that any happened to him,” Jordan says.
Coolio was pronounced dead Wednesday at the age of 59 after he was found lying on the floor of a pal’s bathroom in Los Angeles.
Paramedics reportedly attempted to perform CPR for 45 minutes, and it is suspected that he died of cardiac arrest. An official cause of death has yet to be blasted.
Jordan, who featured on Coolio’s song “Homeboy” on the rapper’s 1997 album “My Soul,” says their close bond transcended music.
“It goes beyond the song we did together,” he told Page Six. “We’ve been circling each other in life for about 20 years, almost 30 years.”
He adds: “He’s my friend and I love him and I haven’t fully processed that.”
Jordan learned of Coolio’s death while watching Wednesday night’s episode of “The Masked Singer,” in which he was eliminated after competing as “Panther.”
“I was unmasked and we’re at home celebrating, the text came in just then, so that’s kind of how I treated ‘Masked Singer’ with my friend in a way at that time”, the “Let’s Ride” says the singer.
Jordan also shares that he is currently in Los Angeles on his way to join Coolio’s family.
Meanwhile, other famous friends of the late “Fantastic Voyage” rapper have taken to social media to pay their respects.
Ice Cube tweeted, “I have witnessed this man’s rise to the top of the industry firsthand. Rest in peace @Coolio.
Actor Martin Lawrence also caught on Twitter to send his “deepest condolences and prayers” to the family of Coolio and Questlove shared a photo of the rapper – whose real name is Artis Leon Ivey Jr. – on his Instagram, writing “Peaceful Journey Brother”.
