Louisiana State Police investigate after RPSO deputy fatally shot individual

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) – Louisiana State Police are investigating after a Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy fatally shot an individual Sunday afternoon in Alexandria.

The incident happened near 7th Street and Broadway Avenue. Several units from the RPSO, Alexandria Police Department and LSP responded to the scene.

In a short statement about an hour after the shooting, RPSO shared the following about the Sunday afternoon incident:

“At approximately 1:30 a.m. this afternoon, a deputy was involved in an incident near 7th Street and Broadway Avenue which resulted in a shooting involving a deputy.

The Louisiana State Police will investigate.

In that statement, RPSO did not share any information about the status of the person shot by law enforcement and did not share any other details about what led up to the shooting, but KALB was able to confirm that the individual who was shot by a Deputy RPSO died in the incident.

While at the scene around 4 p.m., LSP answered questions and provided what was known about the investigation so far.

“State Police will deal with this crime scene, we will conduct the active investigation, everything will run through us,” LSP Senior Trooper Casey Wallace said with Troop E. “We’re going to do everything we can to make sure it’s a very active and very thorough investigation.

Master Trooper Wallace shared that LSP’s Crime Scene Unit was traveling to Alexandria from Baton Rouge to help with the investigation – adding that investigators are compiling body camera footage, eyewitness statements and other evidence for his case.

“We will do everything possible to ensure that everything is recorded accurately. If it takes us all night, that’s what we’ll do,” said Master Trooper Wallace. “We have to be precise.”

At approximately 5 p.m., LSP Superintendent Col. Lamar Davis was joined by RPSO Sheriff Mark Wood, Rapides District Attorney Phillip Terrell and ODA Chief Ronney Howard to provide more information on the shooting.

Sheriff Wood shared that he received a text message Sunday morning from someone who showed a photo of young men walking through the 7th Street and Broadway Avenue area with long magazines in their pockets. After this message, Sheriff Wood sent an additional patrol to the area.

It is not known if the man shot by the RPSO deputy had a connection to this initial photo, but the man was arrested during a traffic stop by the RPSO, which ultimately led to the fatal shooting. Law enforcement did not share the reason for the traffic stop.

Supt. Colonel Davis confirmed the man was shot by the RPSO deputy after a “struggle ensued”.

RPSO shared that the deputy involved in the incident is on administrative leave while the LSP investigates.

KALB awaits more details on the fatal shooting and will update this article with any new information.
