For many people, their most anticipated video game list will include “everything they’re working on.” If you are one of those people, you might be interested to learn that a video showing the The author’s next title appears to have leaked ahead of an official reveal from his studio, Kojima Productions.
The video, which was removed from Streamable for violating the platform’s terms of service, shows a character who looks like Mama from Death Stranding. This character was played by Housemaid and Once upon a time in Hollywood actor Margaret Qualley. The character shown here navigates dark hallways using a flashlight as an ominous figure follows them. Eventually, someone or a fewthing catches them. A game screen will then appear, along with the text “A Hideo Kojima Game” and “Overdose”.
Reporter Tom Henderson that the footage was the same as the leaked video he described in June at . Kojima Productions apparently asked him to withdraw the initial report – a request that Make an effort decreases.
The presentation of the video is weird. The gameplay footage has a picture-in-picture view of a person appearing to be playing the game, as if they were a Twitch streamer. Text that reads “camera player 1” appears at the top of the screen, suggesting this is a playtest. The footage appears on a YouTube-style interface, indicating that it may have been stored on Google Drive. It gets weirder because someone filmed this footage offscreen. This version of the video is then played on a tablet which, in a rather prominent reflection on this screen, is filmed off-screen a second time by a shirtless person.
This is all very unusual. As notes, there is at least a small chance that the sequence is fake, even if creating it would take a lot of effort on the part of a prankster. Qualley’s character model resembles the one used in Death Stranding – which may indicate that Overdose is a direct sequel to Kojima’s last game. It’s also odd to see a game’s creator’s name pop up during screen play, though it’s probably a work in progress sequence (although it’s not impossible to imagine Kojima putting his name on a screen game).
Either way, we might not have to wait too long for more clarity on what’s going on here. Kojima was his next project and he is a regular at the Game Awards, the next edition of which will take place in a month. Kojima is developing a game, but a Death Stranding the sequel is also in the works.
If reports and rumors hold up, Overdose will be Kojima’s first full horror game. The only horror project the Metal Gear creator has released so far is PT, an infamous playable teaser. It was designed as a proof of concept for silent hillsamid Kojima’s acrimonious departure from Konami (which, coincidentally, ).
Meanwhile, Kojima that he had received “ridiculously high” offers for Kojima Productions. However, he has no intention of selling the business as he wishes to retain his creative independence.
